Ero un po' scettica quando mi sono accinta ad ascoltare l'ultimo lavoro di un gruppo che si definiva di genere "Drammatic Death Metal". Quando però ho sentito "The Diarist" mi sono dovuta ricredere: un disco impegnativo, impeccabile dal punto di vista tecnico, con tematiche ed influenze non da poco: subito Aurora si presenta con ipnotizzanti riff e voce cupa, mista a quel famoso inno al Diavolo. Seguono a ruota Play Dead e Pulkovo Meridian, improntati sulla stessa linea. Uno stacco lo troviamo nell'intermezzo The Diarist, angosciante e introspettivo, che ci introduce al brano che è il cuore dell'album: Snowdrifts, un capolavoro di Death preceduto da una malinconice e triste voce femminile. Elementi sinfonici e archi, brevi sprazzi di melodia si intrecciano a pezzi di Death duro e puro, mix che caratterizza tutto il disco e in generale la produzione dei Dark Lunacy. A conclusione troviamo The Farewell Song, che raduna le rovine dell'assedio.

Ci troviamo di fronte al lavoro migliore di Elis, ecluso Catharsis, che deve ancora uscire.
In attesa di questo attesissimo primo disco senza Sabine, risfoglio gli altri dischi.
Che dire? Tracce brevi e vive, grazie soprattutto all'indimenticabile voce di Sabine. Der Letzte Tag, con la quale si apre il Cd, scorre in fretta, un bel brano con il suo sfondo fatto da chitarra, basso e una martellante batteria. Il meglio, però deve ancora arrivare: è Perfect Love, su cui viene subito deviata l'attenzione di chi ascolta. Triste, straziante, molto melodico e impressivo, questa traccia si imprime subito risvegliando prepotentemente emozioni nascoste. Andando verso la fine, troviamo, da notare, Rebirth, un po' misterioso, soprattutto con l'insistente motivo iniziale di tastiera, ed infine abbiamo Ballade, perfetta conclusione per un disco molto ben riuscito.

VISIONS OF ATLANTIS – TRINITY [2007]

Dopo due album mediocri, è con un po’ di timore che mi approccio a questo terzo full-lenght degli austriaci Visions of Atlantis, il secondo sotto Napalm.
Inizio col dire che si nota già dall’opener At the Back of Beyond la presenza di una maggiore pienezza di suono, specialmente nelle chitarre, che risultano così più incisive che in passato.
Le coordinate di questo platter sono quelle su cui la band si muove fin dai tempi del debutto: un power metal sinfonico che, nonostante l’uso della doppia voce, risulta piuttosto piatto e anonimo, a causa di un songwriting decisamente semplicistico. In questo nuovo lavoro, purtroppo le acque non si sono smosse più di tanto: per quanto riguarda le melodie vocali, tutt’altro che memorabili, sembra quasi che la nuova arrivata dietro il microfono, non si trovi a proprio agio, e in certi casi risulta persino fuori luogo, mentre sul lato strumentale le cose non vanno meglio: in particolare le parti di tastiera seguono delle strutture che sanno davvero troppo di “già sentito”, e questo, considerata l’importanza che rivestono in un disco come questo, è un inammissibile difetto.
Insomma, un disco che fallisce nel tentativo di catturare l’attenzione dello spettatore: non un guizzo, non uno spunto che stuzzichi l’orecchio e che allontani la minaccia della noia.
E sì che il tempo per maturare lo hanno avuto, ed effettivamente qualche timido passo avanti rispetto al debutto è stato fatto, ma, per essere un terzo album, questo Trinity vola ancora troppo, troppo basso.

Il nuovo album dei Delain, band tirata su da Martin Westerholt, ex Within Temptation, è arrivato il 30 marzo. Dal sound molto melodico e ricco di tastiere, in generale non si distacca molto dal precedente Lucidity, anche se è più pieno e ricco: come il primo, i brani sono costruiti secondo il solito schema strofa-ritornello-ripresa, ma non stancano chi ascolta. Le atmosfere poi sono meno malinconiche rispetto all'altro lavoro, c'è un uso più ampio delle orchestrazioni: i 45 minuti del disco scorrono fluidi, quasi continui, dal primo brano April Rain, dalla linea energica e ben ritmata, in contrasto con il testo, piuttosto "scuro" e triste, all'ultimo Nothing Left, un congedo lento e nostalgico, un saluto a chi ascolta; passando per Invidia, vivace e intensa, a Control the Storm, dove la voce inconfondibile di Marco Hietala si intreccia con quella di Charlotte, e che dire di Virtue and Vice, la ciliegina sulla torta? Le aspettative non sono state deluse con questo album, e i Delain hanno dimostrato di saper produrre un buon lavoro anche senza tanti appoggi esterni, a dispetto di quanto alcuni malignamente affermano, che Lucidity è stato possibile soltanto grazie ai vari ospiti (Sharon Den Adel, Marco Hietala, Liv Kristine).

UNSUN – THE END OF LIFE [2008]

Quando un chitarrista di una certa fama, e Mauser dei Vader non è l’ultimo arrivato in questo senso, decide di fondare una band le cui parti vocali sono affidate a una fanciulla, il sospetto di “commercialata” sboccia nella mente di tutti noi: e questo sospetto cresce a dismisura nel guardare le foto promozionali di questi Unsun, improntate più che altro sul corpicino della signorina Aya.
Nonostante queste premesse, e da buon amante di certe sonorità, ho deciso di dare lo stesso una chance a The End of Life e… sorpresa! L’album non segnerà certo una svolta nella storia del metal, ma riesce dannatamente bene nella difficile impresa di risultare orecchiabile senza essere banale.
Dalla eterea opener Whispers, alla briosa e vagamente elettronica Indifference, le canzoni si susseguono senza cali, dimostrandoci che Aya, oltre a una voce deliziosa, possiede un certo gusto per il songwriting.
E anche il buon Mauser, come a sottolineare le sue radici Death, fa la scelta azzeccata di non alzare l’accordatura della chitarra, mantenendo un sound aggressivo (anche se forse un po’ impastato), e garantendo così anche una certa personalità a queste undici canzoni.
Commercialata, dunque? Sì, senza dubbio, ma l’ennesima dimostrazione che “commerciale” e “qualità” non sono necessariamente termini antitetici. Non quando si parla di The End of Life.
